What is SPELL (ESL)?
High-level English language skills are important to meet the demands of university-level English in Canada. If you want to study University programs, but you do not have the required proof of English language proficiency (i.e.TOEFL) to start a degree program, you can study SPELL first.
SPELL stands for Sault Program for English Language Learning. It is a program designed for students wanting to study English as a Second Language. If you want to improve your English language skills, SPELL may be the right program for you. SPELL is a full-time program that includes grammar, academic writing, listening, conversation, pronunciation, and reading. SPELL terms start in January, May, and September.
There are five levels of SPELL and you can expect to spend a term (12 weeks) per level. Some students may require only one term of SPELL before entering a degree program; others may require several terms. If you register in SPELL, your language skills will be tested once you arrive on-campus. Upon completion of level 5 of SPELL, with a minimum of 70%, admitted students may begin their degree program.
